Item no. 89
Finely crafted Regency era mahogany two-section bookcase, circa 1815, possibly earlier, fully restored. The blind paneled doors are veneered in dynamic flame mahogany and embellished with Grecian key pattern, raised inlays with paterae in the corners. Original locks, central door strips, and escutcheons are in brass. Lower doors open to reveal a lovely bank of seven drawers (all fully overhauled and running smoothly) with original rectangular bale handles. The upper section is divided into two, with short, adjustable shelving. Interestingly, the pediment is decorated with a fluted frieze to complement the Grecian theme, which found expression in the Regency era. This elegant and functional bookcase may have served, and would still serve very well, in a commercial setting, such as a lawyer’s office.
