Biedermeier oak chest

Handsome solid oak and ebonized wood Biedermeier chest of 5 drawers, circa 1820s. The upper and lower drawers projecting either end of decorative pilasters. Elm crossbanding on top drawer. The chest is of the type with a push-pull key arrangement to operate the drawers. All but one of the locks are original and working (the replacement lock having its own key). At some stage handles and escutcheons were introduced – probably not suited to the period and likely removed at the last restoration. Simple knobs could be introduced for ease of use. Evidence of paper tape having been used inside the carcase covered in Swedish idioms.
