Item no. 59
This new bespoke bar table top makes use of wonderful birdseye blackwood veneer, a rare and randomly occurring variant of the more typical blackwood figure. The solid blackwood edging on the top and the Victorian ash sub-frame have been built using re-purposed timber. The veneer has been pressed onto an exterior grade birch plywood and finished with a wipe-on polyurethane, providing a more serviceable finish.
The cast iron base, circa 1940s-50s, made by Wallace and Henderson, once served as a bootmaker’s machine tool, supporting a motor-driven shaft of various grinding and buffing wheels. At first glance the legs evoked the angled form of the iconic T.H. Brown bar stools, in fact the angles are the same. So the aim was to design a top with a mid-century aesthetic which would accommodate 6 such stools, early originals (as per photo) or new ones, still in production.
The considerable weight of the base, along with foot brakes on each of the heavy duty twin casters, provides good stability.
The table separates into 2 sections for ease of transport.
